"The kids are calling me JCDC now," said Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, the 56-year-old Gallic designer whose work is being celebrated in Popaganda, an upcoming show at London's Victoria and Albert Museum. Those "kids" are none other than M.I.A., MC Kano, and other hard-rhyming stars of the British Grime scene.

The 19th transmediale festival again explores how art and society are changing under the influence of media and technologies which become more and more dominant in our everyday lives. In contemporary art, digital media like video and electronic networks are now so wide-spread that a strict definition of what constitutes ‘media art’ seems no longer possible. We have therefore decided to alter the subtitle of the festival: transmediale is no longer called ‘international media art festival’, but ‘festival for art and digital culture’. This name is supposed to demonstrate the step away from the niche of ‘media art’, yet still points to the field of tension between culture and digital technologies, which continues to form the main driving force of the festival.

"Reality Addicts" lautet das Motto der transmediale 06.
Realitätssucht als grundsätzlich positive Einstellung zur Wirklichkeit findet ihren stärksten Ausdruck im Humor. Dessen kritische, subversive Kraft ist auch der Schwerpunkt der großen Ausstellung mit dem Titel "Smile Machines", die Medienkunst zum Thema Humor aus vier Jahrzehnten zeigt.

“There are about 180 weather cameras on our mainroads. Pictures from weather cameras and information from roadweather stations serve mainly winter maintenance. A new picture is taken every 1-2 hours, or more frequently if the weather is changing. Information from the nearest road weather station is written below the picture. (...) In the summertime only some of the cameras are in function.” (Finnish Road Administration)

Die BAUKUNST GALERIE präsentiert erstmals eine große Einzelschau zu den Werken des deutschen Künstlerduos 'M+M' Marc Weis und Martin De Mattia. In der Ausstellung wird eine Auswahl aus den Serien „kurz vor fünf“ und „in front“ präsentiert, an denen die Künstler seit 2001 bzw. 2003 arbeiten.
Die Ironie des von M+M gewählten Ausstellungstitels „Man muss auch mal bei der Halbwahrheit bleiben“ entfaltet hier seine Virulenz: Durch die Verwendung von Nachrichtenbildern und scheinbar zufällig ausgewählten Szenen an real existierenden Orten, die in chronologischer Abfolge präsentiert werden, spielen die Künstler mit dem Anschein des Dokumentarischen. | pr.text |
