: Music | The Generation of ’38, Still Kicking
The Tanglewood Music Center’s Festival of Contemporary Music, for which composers and new-music fans assemble here every summer, has evolved into a compact parade of competing modern styles. Often that competition has to do with one generation’s concerns giving way to those of the next. This year the composer John Harbison, who directed the festival, assembled a program in the competing aesthetic ideas of a single generation.
