A shrinking sea and a gateway to space, Kazachstan

The Aral Sea in Central Asia is shown in this Envisat image. The Aral Sea, located on the border between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan (to the south), is actually a lake rather than a sea. Over the last 40 years, the Aral Sea, once the fourth largest lake in the world, has evaporated to half its original surface area and a quarter its initial volume, leaving roughly a 36 000 square kilometre zone of dry white-coloured salt terrain now called the Aralkum Desert.
Envisat acquired this image on 14 July 2006 with its Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) instrument while working in Full Resolution Mode to provide a spatial resolution of 300 metres. The image has a width of 545 kilometres.

DREI FARBEN - BLAU

Seit 1994 steht Rohkunstbau für internationale Kunst im Wasserschloss von Groß Leuthen bei Berlin. 2006 entsteht erstmals eine Ausstellungstrilogie: drei Jahre, drei Themen, drei Farben, inspiriert von Krzysztof Kieslowskis Filmtrilogie Drei Farben: Blau, Weiß, Rot, in der der polnische Regisseur die Ideale der Französischen Revolution im Hier und Jetzt thematisiert. Wie Kieslowski setzt Rohkunstbau den gesellschaftspolitischen Phrasen private Geschichten entgegen, denn „die Freiheit des Menschen liegt nicht darin, dass er tun kann, was er will, sondern dass er nicht tun muss, was er nicht will." (frei nach Rousseau)

Das österreichische Künstlerduo Nicole Six/Paul Petritsch erforscht und durchmisst seine Umwelt anhand sehr konkreter Experimente. Die teilweise ins Absurde kippenden Versuchsanordnungen führten über die Jahre zu einem Archiv poetischer Parabeln der Ausgesetztheit des Menschen im Raum, vom Wunsch, Grenzen auszutesten und Begrenztheit womöglich zu überwinden, sich der Angst vor dem Fall zu stellen, der Bodenlosigkeit nicht auszuweichen, sich dem Wind entgegenzuwerfen, gegen die Müdigkeit anzukämpfen, aber auch radikal einfach die Schwerkraft als Naturgesetz und feststehende Koordinate zu missachten.
Kurz: Die uns vertraute Sicherheit in den Räumen unseres Alltags auf die Probe zu stellen und somit auch den eigenen Körper existentiell zu verunsichern.

"We were thinking about something that connects the industrial revolution and the digital revolution," said Deller.
